Objectives
Contents After the study of the nahdah, we continue to the overview of the twentieth century Arabic literature up to our days. Because of historical and political difficulties of most of the Arab countries from the twentieth century onwards, one element in common with most of this geographical area is adab al-iltizàm (commitment literature). Authors and literary currents will be studied (anti-colonial literature, prison literature, exile literature), expressions of a writing addressed to resistance and rebellion against the oppressive policies, foreign or local, experienced from the Arab people.
Extended Syllabus After the study of nahdah, we continue to the overview of the twentieth century Arabic literature up to our days. Because of historical and political difficulties of the Arab countries from the twentieth century onwards, one element in common between different Arab countries is adab al-iltizàm (commitment literature). Several literary voices will be studied, some of them emerging, others already well known, in addition to literary currents (anti-colonial literature, prison literature, exile literature), which represent the writing of resistance and rebellion against all oppressive policies, foreign or local, old and new. The course includes the historical-political framework of the Arab countries, in addition to reading, analysis and translation of extracts from literary works studied in class.

Regarding the modalities of the exam, it consists of an oral interview, made up of two parts: the first aims at verifying the topics covered in class; the second one is based on reading, translation and stylistic analysis of Arabic texts with a brief conversation in Arabic about the topics studied during the course. The total score in thirtieths will be given by the average of the marks obtained in the two respective parts.
