Objectives
Contents General introduction to Semitic linguistics; geographical placement of the Semitic languages; chronology; grammatical features.
Extended Syllabus The Semitic languages in a diachronic perspective; an analysis of the genetic kinship of Arabic with the other Semitic languages.
The Semitic languages and the Chamito-Semitic languages.
Subjects will be distributed as follows:
1. Classification and history of the Semitic languages.
2. The Semitic languages between the IIIrd and the Ist millennium B.C.
3. The Semitic languages after the Ist millennium B.C.
4. Phonological and morphological features: phonetics, radicals, noun typology, gender, number, declension, conjugation.
5. The writing systems.
6. Chamito-Semitic.
