The course is suitable for students who have acquired the written and oral competence expected after attending the Chinese Language First and Second Year Courses.
Objectives
Contents This course is structured in two parts. The first one is a continuation of the study of modern Chinese grammar and lexicon initiated in the Chinese Language First and Second Year Courses, and the second one specifically focuses on the study of Chinese newspaper language.
Extended Syllabus The first part of the course (first semester) in aimed at completing the study of Chinese grammar and, at the same time, strenghtening the knowledges acquired in the previous years. The grammar contents are the following:
- comparative constructs;
- potential complement;
- passive construct;
- simple directional complement;
- complex directional complement.
The second part of the course (second semester) is dedicated to the study of Chinese newspaper language, of its specialist lexicon and specific morphosyntactic constructions, with a particular focus on the socio-political and economic field.

Teaching Methods Classes (36 hours in total) including mid-term tests (students are required to translate sentences from Italian into Chinese), translation and discussion of Chinese newspaper articles previously assigned as homework.
Evaluation methods Verification of learning:
-Mid-term tests (translating sentences and texts from Italian into Chinese and viceversa)
- Final written and oral exams. The written exam, of a 2 hours duration, consists in translating sentences from Italian into Chinese and translating a newspaper article from Chinese into Italian (the use of dictionaries is not permitted, the teacher will provide a glossary of words which have not been explained during class). The oral exam consists in reading, translating and analysing (from a morpho-syntactic perspective) texts included in the handbook and newspaper articles (previously explained in class). In order to be admitted to the oral examination, students must have passed the written one. For the purposes of the final result (i.e. grade) of the exam, the written and oral examination are equally important. The final result, at the end of the oral exam, is expressed with a 30-point scale (passing: 18 to 30 cum laude).
